Darien completed his Bachelor in Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering (Honours) at Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas, Santa Clara, Cuba in 2007. Two years later he finished a Masters degree in Signals and Systems with mention on Digital Signal and Image Processing at the same university. In 2009 he joined the Environmental Modelling Department of the Centre of Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Throughout his work experience, Darien developed strong programming and data processing skills applied to environmental problems. His primary areas of interest include urban remote sensing, GIS data processing and climate modelling techniques.

Darien began his PhD (Evaluating the effectiveness of the urban forestry as an UHI mitigation strategy at city scale) in May 2011, which is linked to Project P3 (Green Cities and Microclimate), within the Cities as Water Supply Catchments Program.
