As an environmental microbiologist, Catherine investigates how microbes are affected by environmental conditions, and at the same time how microbes influence their surrounding environment, in a variety of habitats from urban waterways and engineered biofilters to soils and sediments. Prior to moving to Monash in early 2011 to establish the Environmental and Public Health Microbiology Lab in the Department of Civil Engineering, Catherine completed her PhD in Microbiology at the University of Melbourne and conducted postdoctoral research at CSIRO and the University of California, Berkeley. With the recent availability of methods to measure microbial-scale interactions, Catherine’s research has developed a number of novel methods for answering questions within microbial ecology.
